From the grower:

This rare, North American elwesii poculiform snowdrop is one of the “Bear” series named by Cal Mateer from British Columbia, Canada who personally shared it with me. Named for the spirit bear: Ursus americanus kermodei, it is an subspecies of the American black bear.

Once upon a time, the only poculiform elwesii snowdrop was discovered in the last century by Doug Ruhren while he was gardening at Montrose Garden in North Carolina, where Nancy Goodwin stood guard. Since then, others have come to light, especially this stunner! Sometimes green tips will appear on some of the white tepals for unknown reasons. Typical of the species elwesii, it will grow in full sun with its bluish foliage, an indicator that the plant will thrive in a sunnier location but the flower spikes will remain shorter in that situation. It is a good clump-forming plant and will eventually become a stunner in the garden.
