From the grower:

One of the best of the Galanthus elwesii Hiemalis Group, originally from the garden of E.P. Barnes, a surgeon in Northampton, UK. He received a consignment shipment from Barrs nursery in 1928 including this remarkable bloom which flowered earlier than every other bulb in that lot. He shared it with Oliver Wyatt, who labeled it as ‘Earliest of All’. Sometime after 1973 at the Old Manor, Naughtron, Suffolk, Wyatt’s last garden, the plants were simply labelled ‘Barnes’ where the stock was maintained and distributed by Rod and Jane Leeds. These two clones are similar but Rod maintains that Barnes blooms three weeks earlier than ‘Earliest of All’, making it all the more important for the northern gardeners who have an earlier winter.

In my garden, Barnes blooms in tandem with Thanksgiving and is a welcome spectacle at that special time of year. It forms a graceful clump in time and invites the pollinators on a warm day.
